Summary

  • Universal Pictures has confirmed a May 19, 2028 release date for the long-awaited sequel
  • Original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell
  • Directing duo Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) are helming the project

After months of speculation and a massive cultural resurgence for its leading man, Universal Pictures has officially greenlit The Mummy 4, reuniting Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for the first time in over two decades. Set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, the film marks a return to the franchise’s roots, bringing back the chemistry that turned the 1999 original into a definitive summer blockbuster.

The studio has tapped Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (collectively known as Radio Silence) to direct the legacy sequel. The duo, best known for revitalizing the Scream franchise and directing the horror-thriller Ready or Not, will work from a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill). While specific plot details remain strictly under wraps, reports indicate that the new installment will serve as a direct sequel to the first two films, effectively disregarding the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor — a film Weisz famously opted out of.

Fraser, who recently won an Academy Award for The Whale, will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Gillett described the upcoming film as “beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun,” promising Empire to recapture the specific tonal blend of action and horror that defined Stephen Sommers’ original trilogy opener.

Stay tuned for the official trailer. The Mummy 4 is scheduled to release in theaters globally on May 19, 2028.
