Despite its “mundane” material, the viral, vintage-inspired collaboration sold out quickly due to its meticulous tailoring and unique drawstring pleated trousers.
As classic tailoring continues to loom in the fashion’s orbit, Fruit of the Loom Japan and designer Keiji Kaneko have put their minds together to elevate a mundane material into a sartorial silhouette. This week, the collaborators have unveiled the Athletic Formal Suit, which uses 100% cotton jersey, the same fabric used not only for t-shirts, but also for underwear. Among the most impressive qualities is that it’s 100% machine-washable.
However, this complete two-piece is not nearly as light as your undershirt, at 12 oz, which is nearly double the average tee. The heavyweight jersey lends itself well to the double-breasted jacket and pleated trousers, boasting a drawstring typical of joggers. With a four-button closure, a peaked collar, and a widened lapel, the jacket is the highlight, boasting a distinctly vintage look. Finally, patch pockets are placed on both sides finish it with utility.
In an Instagram post, co-designer Kosuke Kambara shared (translated from Japanese), “I personally deconstructed a vintage jacket to create a master pattern and adjusted it to fit Kaneko-san.” “There are not many instances where we talk about attention to detail, but these items are filled with more care and struggle than you might think,” he added.
Both pieces arrive in original packaging, printed with an illustration by the collaborator, who runs the brand. As of right now, the product appears to be completely sold out on Fruit of the Loom Japan, but one could see the collaboration returning given its immediate virality.
