Inside The Met’s ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ Exhibition, Contemporary Designers Define the Modern Black Dandy

Top Fashion News: May 9

On Monday night, the annual Met Gala celebrated the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ exhibition. The annual festivity brought out some of the most influential cultural figures to the Met steps, including carpet queen Rihanna in March Jacobs and Met Gala co-chair Colman Domingo in Valentino. But days before the Met Gala inaugurated the exhibition, the Metropolitan Museum gave Hypebeast an exclusive preview of the exhibition with guest curator Monica Miller, author of Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Open to the public on May 10, the showcase chronicles Black dandyism and fashion’s role in shaping Black identities from the 18th century to today, building on the narratives told in Miller’s 2009 text through a collection of costumes, photographs, fine art, and more historical paraphernalia.

Maison Margiela, Diesel, Jil Sander & More May See up to 9 Percent Price Hikes Due to Tariffs

Top Fashion News: May 9

On Monday, OTB Group commented on possible price increases across its brands if US President Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs go into effect. According to Reuters, the Italian conglomerate, parent to Maison Margiela, Diesel, Jil Sander, Marni, Amiri, and more, is presently evaluating the impact of the tariff increases on price points across the group overall.

At a press conference regarding the brand’s new sustainability report, OTB CEO Ubaldo Minelli said, “We are evaluating, brand by brand, possible actions to reduce the impact.” “Simulations indicate that to balance the impact, we would have to increase prices by 8-9 percent for the group overall,” he continued later.

Gucci to Show Cruise 2026 Collection at Brand Archive

Top Fashion News: May 9

Gucci has unveiled the official date and location of its cruise 2026 collection, designed by the house’s team, as Demna readies for his eventual debut. On May 15, the house will open its Florence brand archive to spectators at Palazzo Settimanni. Nestled on via delle Caldaie in the Oltrarno district, the 15th-century building was purchased by Gucci in 1953. The historic building was transformed into the Gucci Archive in 2021, after serving as a factory, showroom, and its first workshop over the years.

Gucci’s chief executive officer, Stefano Cantino, said,“The archive is not merely a repository of our past; it is a living space where Gucci’s identity codes are preserved and reinterpreted through an ongoing dialogue. Presenting the cruise 2026 collection here reaffirms our bond with the cultural and artisanal heritage that defines us, while projecting it into the future with coherence and ambition.”

Reebok Appoints Jide Osifeso as Head of Basketball

Since discreetly starting his role last summer, the designer and founder of streetwear label Hymne has brought his fresh perspective to the British sneaker purveyor’s basketball apparel and footwear. Having released multiple collaborations with Reigning Champ, as well as Reebok, Osifeso may be a well-established name in the industry, but he also has the young energy to give Reebok its refreshed cultural relevance. On top of merch for Kendrick Lamar and SZA, and crafting a special collection with Daniel Kaluuya for Jordan Peele’s Nope, the designer has worked with some of the most influential figures in contemporary pop culture. Though his latest role only began a year ago, the designer was brought into Reebok in 2019, when he was hired as Senior Director of Marketing–Footwear and Product Management.
