The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis presents the first U.S. solo museum exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Pan Daijing. Born in Guiyang and based in Berlin, Daijing is known for crafting immersive, emotionally charged environments that span sound, sculpture, video, architecture and, above all, performance. A self-taught composer, she’s drawn attention in recent years for her bold explorations of experimental and industrial sound, earning her a place among the inaugural medalists of the Art Basel Awards.
In Sudden Places, the artist transforms the white-walled Burnet Gallery into a dark, sensory landscape that “evoke sensations of entropy, ennui and melancholia,” per the institution’s statement. The exhibition is anchored by four major works including “The Hour Between Dog and Wolf” (2021–2024), her most ambitious moving-image work to date, and “Scale Figures” (2021/25), a cross-campus sound and sculptural installation where two voices echo one another in a haunting symphony. Also on view are two new untitled chalk-on-canvas paintings inspired after Mute, her exhibition at Haus der Kunst in Munich last spring.
“Through minimal means, Daijing blurs the boundary separating the artwork and its environment, creating deeply emotive landscapes that conjure a range of associations with solitude, intimacy and trust,” expressed curator Pavel Pyś. “To experience Dajing’s work is to reconcile seemingly what are opposites – the individual and collective, presence and absence, hope and despair.”
