Ayrton Senna’s 1992 F1 Helmet Sells for Record $963,700 USD at Auction
Surpassing the previous record held by Charles Leclerc’s 2023 Monaco Grand Prix helmet by nearly three times.
A race-worn helmet from Ayrton Senna’s legendary 1992 Formula 1 season has sold for a record-breaking $963,700 USD via RM Sotheby’s, setting a new global benchmark for the most expensive race-worn helmet ever auctioned. The previous record was held by Charles Leclerc’s 2023 Monaco Grand Prix helmet, which fetched $352,315 USD.
This rare Shoei X-4 helmet — significantly lighter than the standard version — was used by Senna during the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix weekend, most famously when he stopped mid-qualifying to assist fellow driver Érik Comas following a violent crash. The Brazilian champion leapt from his McLaren, cut off Comas’ engine and stabilized his head until medics arrived — an act widely credited with saving the Frenchman’s life.
Finished in Senna’s signature yellow with sponsor logos from Marlboro, Hugo Boss, Shell and Nacional, the helmet features its original KTEL radio system, dark blue Honda visor strip and unique chinbar padding cutout. Backed by a 2025 inspection report and matched with period race photos, the helmet’s provenance and heroic backstory make it a coveted artifact from one of F1’s most revered figures.
