The concept of a “third place”—a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book The Great Good Place—suggests that individuals need more than just a home and a work environment. They also require a social space where they can connect with like-minded people and foster a sense of community.

For many, the golf course could serve as this third place. However, public golf courses don’t encourage socializing beyond the hours spent on the course, and country clubs don’t typically prioritize accessibility. Even House—a new membership club offering everything from working space to simulators and coffee—aims to marry the best of both worlds.

It hasn’t officially opened yet, but Even House already has a waiting list for its four tiers of memberships which are priced between $200 and $450 USD a month. Unlike other competitors in the “golf entertainment” category which range from indoor golf venues, to interactive driving ranges and mini golf courses, the founders hope that Even House will be a place that people return to again and again. And rather than coming for a few hours and then leaving, maybe they’ll stay for half or even the entire day. Given the way that creatives and athletes with flexible working schedules have embraced the sport in recent years, it’s not hard to imagine.

We recently connected with the team to find out more about the community they’re building.

Why did you decide to open Even House?

The idea came about pretty organically as I was getting more into golf and learning about the industry. I saw how golf was changing—more people from different backgrounds were picking up the game, off-course options like Topgolf were booming, and new brands were popping up everywhere. Traditional country clubs were doing well, but they’re not accessible to everyone. That’s when the idea for Even House started to take shape—a membership club where you can play indoor golf, hang out socially, get work done, have dinner, and just chill. It’s a second home for members, somewhere they want to spend time, even when they’re not swinging a club.

How did you choose the location?

We’re in Southern California, with golf being such a huge part of the culture here it’s perfect for a concept like this. We wanted a spot that was big enough to house everything we wanted to do, with high ceilings, a cool vibe, and in a central area for both locals and nearby businesses. We worked with a few agents, but nothing really clicked. So, we took matters into our own hands and literally walked the streets until we found the perfect space. It’s 14,000 square feet in this beautiful building, with a private patio, and we’re surrounded by awesome tenants like The Parlor and Rye Goods. Couldn’t have asked for a better spot. As we look to our future locations, we are putting a unique methodology into location and space. But more to come on that another day!

Tell us about the design of the space and any choices you made with regard to flow, lighting, materials, etc.

The design was super important to us. We really wanted a space that felt fresh and modern, but still had that timeless country club feel. Think of it as blending the best of both worlds. The majority of the furniture is custom-made, which gives the whole place a really personal touch. It’s all about creating a space where the social side of things is front and center. Whether you’re entertaining clients, grabbing a drink with friends, or playing the putting course, everything flows seamlessly.

What kinds of events do you envision hosting at Even House?

We want to host all sorts of things—pop up events around food, golf fittings, special musical guests, all the way to charity tournaments and networking events. There’s so much potential for people to get together, whether it’s for golf or just a way to meet like-minded individuals. We see Even House as a community hub, so the events will reflect that—fun and inclusive.

How would you describe the culture you’re hoping to cultivate?

We’re all about creating a laid-back yet high-end culture where people can connect and unwind. It’s about inclusivity, where no matter your golf skill level or background, you can feel comfortable and have a great time. We want our members to feel like they’re part of something special, but in a way that doesn’t feel stuffy or intimidating. It’s all about building relationships, having fun, and offering a place where people can come to recharge.
