With the confirmed returns of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and members of the original X-Men cast, Marvel Studios is again upping the ante for Avengers: Doomsday with unexpected teasers.

The recent leak of the first Doomsday teaser, which plays as a preview before Avatar: Fire and Ash, sent shockwaves through the internet as it seemingly confirmed the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This revelation ignited a flurry of fan speculation regarding the plot as well as the significance of the former Captain America’s involvement. Drawing on the latest footage and fan theories, we broke down what we currently think we know about Avengers: Doomsday.

According to the leakers, the teaser supposedly shows Steve Rogers dismounting a motorcycle and entering his home in a past timeline. He stares nostalgically at the old uniform that he wore in Endgame before turning his attention affectionately towards a baby. A stripped-down, piano rendition of the official Avengers theme accompanies the footage, followed by the text, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.” The teaser then concludes with a countdown to the official release date of the movie.

While the possibility of Evans’ return is exciting, Marvel’s decision to feature Steve Rogers prominently in the first trailer suggests a deeper narrative significance. His story seemingly ended on a happy note at the end of Endgame, when he traveled back to the 1940s to live a full life and marry Peggy Carter, then reappeared as an old man to pass his Captain America shield and legacy to the Falcon, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). This perfect ending makes his return a major narrative shift, leading fans to speculate that Steve will play a crucial role in Doomsday. Many fans now theorize that his decision to stay in the past is the direct cause of the “Doomsday” event – possibly triggering an “Incursion.” Similar to events led by Peter Parker’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the use of Darkhold in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this universal collision may be the price for altering the timeline.

In addition, the focus on Steve’s journey in the past, directly tied to the end of Endgame, has fueled speculation that Doomsday serves as a direct, immediate sequel to Endgame. Supporting this theory is Marvel’s strategic decision to re-release Endgame in theaters in late 2026, hinting at a stronger connection between the two films than previously expected.

There’s also the matter of the baby’s identity, which remains a mystery. Clues exist in Marvel lore; the only biological child of Steve and Peggy is Sharon Rogers, who eventually inherits the mantle of Captain America and appears in the video game Marvel Future Fight and related comics. If this child is indeed Sharon, it could introduce a third Captain America into the MCU worldview.

In parallel, Doomsday directors, the Russo brothers, posted a mysterious black-and-white image on Instagram earlier in the week. The heavily zoomed-in photo depicts a blurry shape that fans interpret as a “V.” Some suggest the “V” stands for Vision, potentially teasing the character’s return following Paul Bettany‘s hints about appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars. Alternatively, the shape could represent the branches of Yggdrasil, the World Tree introduced in Loki. The diverging lines may symbolize a “nexus event” that split the timeline. Given the latest teaser, this split is likely to be caused by Steve’s decision to stay in the past.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, three more trailers are expected to be released in the coming weeks, timed to coincide with the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash. These upcoming clips are rumored to feature Thor and the infamous Victor von Doom. If these reports are accurate, the long, seven-year wait for the next Avengers film is about to pay off with a massive reveal.
