The creative partnership between Basketcase and New Balance deepens with a second collaborative take on the low-profile 204L silhouette. Moving beyond their previous theme of ritual, this latest iteration, dubbed “Pine Valley,” is a deeply personal project, reflecting Basketcase founder Zach Kinninger’s journey back to his roots—a theme dubbed “RUN HOME.” The design visually encapsulates the creative comfort Kinninger rediscovered in the quiet, familiar setting of his small-town upbringing.
The aesthetic of the “Pine Valley” 204L is steeped in nostalgia, specifically referencing the style of his youth: rugged hiking footwear paired with blue jeans. The shoe itself is a compelling fusion of early-2000s styling and sleek ’70s running shoe geometry. It features rich, deep brown premium nubuck uppers layered over mesh, accented by traditional hiking-inspired eyelets. Furthering the nostalgic grit, the insoles are lined with a flannel pattern, reminiscent of grunge fashion and rugged outdoor wear.
Custom detailing is abundant, including interchangeable rope and yarn laces for personalization and bespoke tongue labels featuring Basketcase’s unique ballerina motif. The shoe’s foundation is a contrasting black EVA foam midsole, ensuring modern comfort. Supported by a surreal campaign shot by Ben Zank and a short film by Mowgly Lee, the Basketcase x New Balance 204L launches exclusively through Basketcase on December 12, with a wider global release via New Balance on December 19 and on HBX on December 20.
