Universal Genève Revives Iconic "Nina" Compax for Its Relaunch
The legendary watch made famous by Nina Rindt returns in a Tribute series blending vintage design with modern craftsmanship.
Summary
- Universal Genève returns with a modern iteration of “the Nina” Compax chronograph — a model popularized by iconic model and socialite, Nina Rindt
- This release reimagines the watch with grand feu enamel dials, artisanal straps and restored Caliber 281 movements
Universal Genève has announced its highly anticipated return to watchmaking with the unveiling of the Tribute to Compax collection, an ultra-exclusive release that pays homage to one of the most iconic vintage chronographs, known simply among collectors as “the Nina.” The original Compax, worn by Finnish model and style icon Nina Rindt in the 1960s, achieved legendary status in the Formula 1 paddock. For its modern-day relaunch, Universal Genève, now preparing its return to the market, revisits this defining story to demonstrate its revived philosophy as “Le Couturier de la Montre” (the watch couturier): bridging high watchmaking with artisanal craft.
The original watch was notable for its clean black‑on‑white dial layout, red chronograph seconds hand for visibility as well as its association with motorsport timing. Yet Nina’s personal touch defined its identity: she replaced the steel bracelet with a wide leather cuff, or “bund” strap, originally designed for pilots to protect against cockpit heat. This bold choice gave the chronograph a striking new look, blending utilitarian function with fashion-forward sensibility. Photographs of Nina wearing the watch circulated widely, cementing its reputation as both a racing tool and a style icon.
The Tribute to Compax watches are offered as two ultra-exclusive sets of three, in 18k white gold or 18k red gold cases, both measuring 36mm in diameter. While dials are elevated in grand feu enamel, a key detail retained from Nina’s modified Compax is the red chronograph seconds hand, which slices across the enamel with graphic clarity.
Inside these contemporary pieces beats another piece of history: original restored Caliber 281 movements from the Compax’s era. These manual-winding, column-wheel chronographs were the technical backbone of Universal Genève’s 1960s reputation. By reintroducing them, Universal Genève connects the Tribute to Compax directly to its original era while hinting at the brand’s forthcoming return to movement making.
This ultra-exclusive release is limited to only two complete sets and is available exclusively on request. Proceeds will support the Geneva Watchmaking School, preserving the rare crafts essential to watches of this caliber. For more details, head over to Universal Genève’s official website.
