Summary

  • A factory-sealed Xbox One edition of Fortnite from 2017 sold for $42,500 USD at auction
  • The high value is due to the game receiving the highest collectible grade, a 10 A++ from Wata
  • This sale follows records set by games like Super Mario 64, which sold for $1.56 million USD

A factory-sealed copy of the free-to-play game Fortnite was recently sold for $42,500 USD at a Heritage Auctions sale.

This particular sale involved a sealed Xbox One edition of Fortnite from its original 2017 print run, which had an initial retail price of only $60 USD. A significant factor contributing to its high auction value is the game’s collectible condition, as it received the highest possible grade — a 10 A++—from video game grading company Wata.

In fact, high prices for video games at auction are not entirely newsworthy. In 2021, for example, a factory-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros sold for an unverified $2 million USD. The officially recognized record, however, belongs to a copy of Super Mario 64, which sold for $1.56 million USD, according to Guinness World Records, setting the highest amount ever bid for a video game.
