A historic chapter in menswear is coming to a close. Véronique Nichanian, the singular artistic director who has guided the Hermès Men’s universe since 1988, is stepping down after an extraordinary 37-year tenure. Nichanian’s departure, announced this week, marks the end of the longest continuous creative directorship at a major fashion house.

Nichanian was personally appointed by then-CEO Jean-Louis Dumas and was responsible for carving out the Hermès menswear identity from the ground up. Her vision has consistently prioritized a philosophy of quiet luxury and exceptional craftsmanship. Her collections—renowned for their use of the finest materials and sophisticated color palettes—epitomized effortless elegance, creating clothing that felt both meticulously made and deeply wearable. She famously described her approach as slowing down time and injecting humanity into the garments. Nichanian spoke to Le Figaro in an exclusive interview, “I still love this job. However, I believe that to practice it the way I like to, it now requires more and more time — and today, I want to devote that time to other things… Hermès has, above all, shown great elegance by allowing me to choose the moment that felt right to step down. I’ve been thinking about it and discussing it with Axel and Pierre-Alexis Dumas for a year or two now. It’s time to pass the baton.”

The 71-year-old designer’s influence has been immense, overseeing the division’s transformation into one of the most powerful names in global luxury. She will present her final collection in January 2026 during Paris Fashion Week. As the industry looks to see who will succeed her, Nichanian leaves behind a monumental legacy defined by consistency, precision, and an unwavering commitment to the integrity of her craft.
