Nissan's Electrified "Godzilla" R32 Skyline GT-R to Debut at Tokyo Auto Salon
Available for viewing from January 10 to 13.

Update: Nissan has finally shared details on its “R32 EV” project, following its debut at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. This one-off electrified Godzilla showcases the possibilities of merging legendary automotive heritage with modern EV tech. Spearheaded by longtime EV powertrain engineer Ryozo Hiraku, the project seeks to preserve the essence of the R32 GT-R while future-proofing its performance for the decades to come. With a pair of 160 kW electric motors and a 62 kWh battery borrowed from the LEAF NISMO RC02, the R32 EV aims to replicate the driving dynamics of its gas-powered predecessor. Despite its increased weight — an additional 370 kg from EV components — the car’s torque and performance have been carefully tuned to match the original R32 GT-R’s specifications.
The R32 EV retains its iconic aesthetic, finished in Gun Grey metallic while integrating advanced features like NISMO Sports suspension with Öhlins dampers, larger R35-inspired brakes and custom 18-inch wheels. Inside, the cabin balances nostalgia with modernity, featuring Recaro seats and digital updates to the original gauge cluster. To replicate the original driving experience beloved by enthusiasts, Nissan has incorporated paddle shifters, artificial engine sounds reminiscent of the RB26DETT and simulated gear shifts.
At the time of writing, Nissan has no plans to make the vehicle available as a commercial release. See more of the R32 EV in the video by Nissan below.
Original: Nissan is set to unveil an electrified version of its iconic R32 Skyline GT-R at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS), scheduled for January 10-12 at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo. This project, which has been in development for over 18 months, transforms the legendary “Godzilla” into a modern EV.
The original R32 Skyline GT-R, produced between 1989 and 1994, was powered by a 2.6L twin-turbo inline-six engine, delivering 276 hp. It featured an advanced all-wheel-drive system capable of adjusting power distribution from rear-wheel drive up to a 50:50 split as needed. While Nissan has not yet disclosed specific power or performance figures for the EV conversion, the project reflects a growing trend in the automotive industry to retrofit classic vehicles with electric drivetrains. This approach combines the nostalgic appeal of vintage cars with the environmental benefits and tech advancements of electric mobility.
Notably, the “R32EV” will be showcased alongside Nissan’s latest innovations. Attendees of this year’s TAS will have the opportunity to witness this blend of heritage and innovation firsthand, with the electrified Godzilla expected to be a highlight of the show.
