Rare Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG P900 Prototype Surfaces for Auction
One of only two ever built, notably featuring the M156 6.3L V8 — the first engine fully developed by AMG.
Bonhams Cars is set to auction a rare and storied AMG prototype — the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG P900 Prototype.
The P900 Prototype serves as a bridge between Mercedes-Benz’s dominant DTM race cars and road-going high-performance vehicles. While only 100 CLK DTM road cars were produced, this prototype is one of just two ever built. Its sibling resides permanently in a U.S. museum, making this the only example available on the open market.
Under the hood lies the historic M156 6.3L V8 engine, the first powerplant fully developed by AMG. While slightly less potent than the supercharged V8 found in the road-going CLK DTM, the P900 still produces an impressive 510 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. This engine would later find fame in the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.
The P900’s design closely mirrors its DTM race car inspiration, especially with its aggressive rear spoiler and stripped-down interior that prioritizes performance over comfort. It has seen minimal use, with only 577 km reflected on its odometer.
Driven by racing legends like Klaus Ludwig, Jean Alesi, Jamie Green and Bernd Schneider, this prototype carries both engineering excellence and significant motorsport heritage. Bidding for the P900 Prototype is set to begin on February 6 as part of Bonhams Cars’ The Grand Palais sale in Paris and is estimated to fetch as much as $821,000 USD.
