Take a Look Around the Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto Hotel Designed by Kengo Kuma
A “perfect sanctuary nestled on the hilltop of Kyoto.”
Designed by renowned Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma, the Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto Hotel is thoughtfully designed as a sanctuary situated at the boundary between the historic city and the bamboo forests.
Officially opened its doors last year, this unique location allows the hotel to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, creating a harmonious and tranquil environment for guests. This luxury hotel is unique in the city, featuring a Bamboo Pavilion, natural hot springs and an authentic Noh stage where guests can enjoy classical Japanese performances. The design aims to create a serene retreat that offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city while providing easy access to urban amenities.
One of the standout features of the hotel is the Noh stage which can be found outside the establishment. The stage is made transparent using louvers, giving it an ethereal quality that makes it appear as if it is dissolving into the forest.
The hotel’s large eaves welcome guests with an impressive three-tiered structure, built with slatted timber that nods to traditional Japanese architecture, while also imbuing the building with a serene and modern appeal.
The studio also meticulously preserved and restored the site’s existing landscaping, which consisted of trees, moss, a small bamboo grove as well as stone. This lush, natural environment beautifully conceals the hot spring, which feeds the hotel’s onsen baths. The seamless integration of the restored landscape enhances the hotel’s tranquil and immersive atmosphere.
