_J.L-A.L_ FW25 Draws Inspiration From a 1970s French Sci-Fi Film

Visual elements from the animated ‘La Planète Sauvage’ (1973) give _J.L-A.L_’s latest offering an otherworldy edge.

Long before James Cameron’s Avatar, René Laloux’s animated film La Planète Sauvage (1973) featured blue-skinned humanoid aliens called Draags who ruled over humans captured from planet Earth. It’s this historic sci-fi movie that inspired _J.L-A.L_‘s otherworldly FW25 collection presented at Paris Fashion Week, which included new outerwear with Goldwin, sneakers from HOKA, and details made by artist Victoria Ohanyan.

At first glance, the subtle references to the 1973 movie are easy to miss — there are no blue-skinned models or any overtly alien characteristics. However, upon closer inspection details like the bulbous headbands and intarsia patterns, recall the unique garb of the ruling aliens.  Additionally, pumpkin-shaped bucket bags and beaded accessories mimic the natural life forms found on the fictional planet “Ygam.”

Much like the film which depicts a more primitive form of human society in traditional illustration style, the collection is not overtly futuristic. Lazer-cut shearling, brushed wools and other soft fabrics counterbalance technical silhouettes like puffer jackets, windbreakers and tactical pants.

_J.L-A.L_ cleverly mirrors the hand-drawn shading featured in the film with gradient wool fabric developed by Manteco. The gradient application is best demonstrated on a black-to-gray overcoat designed with a discrete placket concealing the closure. Elsewhere, refined interpretations of the patterned clothing worn by the Draags appear on duo-tone knitwear, including a brown sweater with maroon intarsia on the chest, shoulders and forearms.

Since gray, brown and black hues dominate the line, _J.L-A.L_’s architectural garment construction and textured materiality do the work of evoking an extraterrestrial dimension. In one look a brown cardigan is perforated with a fine geometric pattern and a diagonal zip closure, while in another look, a wool scarf is given with a bouncy crystalline structure with permanent pleats.

In addition to new pieces with Goldwin using AI-driven design methods, the collection introduces two sleek colorways of HOKA’s Mafate X. While Victoria Ohanyan’s wooden additions to the collection are subtle, they add an organic contrast to _J.L-A.L_’s tech-forward aesthetic.
