Arkkitehdit NRT Completes Renovation on Alvar Aalto’s Finlandia Hall
Now intergrated with modern functionalities.
Helsinki-based architectural firm Arkkitehdit NRT has extensively renovated Finlandia Hall, one of the country’s most significant modern buildings.
Originally built in 1971 as a congress and event venue, Finlandia Hall is an iconic building by Alvar Aalto, who is perhaps Finland’s most celebrated architect and designer in modern history. The Finlandia Hall is also a prominent example of monumental architecture from the later years of his career.
The renovation respects the building’s historical significance while integrating modern functionalities. Arkkitehdit NRT has preserved the building’s marble-clad facade as well as some of its original furniture that was designed by Aalto. This extensive project not only brings the building up to modern standards but also introduces new spaces such as a restaurant, wine bar, accommodation areas, an exhibition room and a design shop — all to make Finlandia Hall more accessible to the general public.
Finlandia Homes, the building’s new accommodation apartments, provide a unique opportunity for guests to stay in the iconic building. The rooms combine functional Finnish aesthetics with a homey atmosphere, furnished with iconic furniture, such as Aalto’s Aztek stool.
The revamped Finlandia Hall is now open. Take a look around the venue in the gallery above.
