See How '70s Fashion Darling Emma Winder Took on a Series of Whimsical Misadventures During NYFW
Tracking energy levels with the Samsung Galaxy Ring while catching shows and afterparties.
Fashion savant Emma Winder is bringing back the ‘70s, one vintage lapel at a time. The prolific YouTuber and content creator met up with Hypebeast during New York Fashion Week to showcase how she manages a jam-packed schedule while still finding time to enjoy her English breakfast tea. Equipped with Samsung’s latest Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Z Flip6, Winder captures the excitement and energy of the highly anticipated LaQuan Smith afterparty and more.
While the rest of the world clings to the retro aesthetics of the 1990s à la Rynona Ryder and Paris Hilton, Winder opts for dapper suits, pencil skirts and disco-inspired floor-length gowns. A must-follow on TikTok and Instagram, the 22-year old’s attachment to 1970s fashion — colloquially associated with paisley, corduroy, outlandish prints, patterns and sharp lapels — gravitates more toward the likings of Saint Laurent’s iconic 1971 wartime collection and rock canon. “My dad used to play The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Police, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac — classic dad music, realizing now, today, is absolute bangers. I was intrigued and went down this rabbit hole.” Since her teen years, she’s refined her affinity for ‘70s-coded clothing, subtly nodding to these bygone rock stars sans the elements of caricature.
Hailing from Brighton, England, Winder touched down in the Big Apple to attend the LaQuan Smith afterparty, seen dancing, vibing with the crowd, enjoying McDonald’s and documenting special moments with the Galaxy Z Flip6. Asked how she manages the calamity of New York Fashion Week, Winder immediately thinks of her go-to beverage. “The day starts with English breakfast tea and ends with an English breakfast tea. I love it. I’ve been drinking it since I was six years old. If I’m stressed, I’m sticking the kettle on.”
Next up on the roster is the Coach Fall/Winter 2024 show, but true to the city’s hustle and bustle, Winder ultimately misses open doors, enjoying a savory dollar slice instead. Posted in front of the venue, she captures jovial bystanders attempting to catch celebrity sightings, occasionally checking her Galaxy Ring for accurate readings of her stress level.
“My friends are always flexin’ their steps on me — ‘Oh, I did 60,000 steps today.’ In London, I walk a lot, so with this cute ring and fitness tracker, I can start checking my steps. And, in general, my sleep schedule is absolutely terrible. So it’s good to start seeing how I manage that, creating proper sleep times.”
Accessorized with Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, Winder uses the device’s comprehensive data (heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature and more) to inform her wellness habits throughout the day — discerning when to drink more water, when to take a break and people watch over a cup of tea and when to wind down for a proper eight hours of rest. The nifty gesture controls also provide seamless functionality with the Galaxy Z Flip6, allowing her to snap selfies and ‘fit checks on the fly.
Winder has no plans of slowing down anytime soon, but she’s open to the reality that her aesthetic leanings may change. Among the trends she’s encountered while in New York, she mentions “Pirate Chic.” “It’s already here. It landed in New York. It’s not yet in London, but I’m carrying it back. It’s silk blouses, loads of draped jewels — bracelets, bangles and rings. It’s velvet; it’s textured; it’s lace trimming.”
Content creation is not as easy as it looks, especially if you’re capturing a hectic event like NYFW, but Winder is learning how to evolve and adapt. “Now everyone’s a content creator, right? You have to find your niche. I like to think outside the box and find new ways of shooting something. We’re humans. We’re curious, we’re nosy — we like to see what other people are doing. But if everyone’s doing the same thing, we’re just gonna turn into robots.” Creativity is the key to the game, but so is authenticity, and Winder is all about expressing her true self. “If you know me, you know I love anything weird, wacky and goofy. Anything a bit strange is right up my alley.”
It may have been a brat girl summer, but for Winder, it’s giving 1970s from the pub to the streets of SoHo, no matter the season.
