Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo is gearing up for Reloaded: The Rebirth of Mechanical Watchmaking 1980-1999, its upcoming thematic auction featuring a selection of neo-vintage timepieces that defined the horological landscape between the ’80s -‘90s.
From exquisite, avante-garde timepieces to innovative mechanical complications, the lots comprise works from renowned makers such as Philippe Dufour, F.P. Journe, Derek Platt and Rolex. Leading the lineup is the first-ever Rainbow Daytona, ref. 16599 from Rolex, a dazzling timepiece encased in white gold and fitted with degradé-hued sapphires on the bezel. Estimated for 3 million CHF (approx. $3.5 million USD), this timepiece was created as a piece-unique in the ‘90s and has now, become one of the most exclusive and rare examples of the model.
The sale will also spotlight a Tourbillon Souverain à Remontoire d’Egalité, the first wristwatch sold by François-Paul Journe, founder of F.P.Journe. Estimated at more than 2 million CHF (approx. $2.3 million USD), the timepiece is one of only three to be handmade by the founder himself.
Other highlights include a unique Philippe Dufour Duality and Derek Pratt’s Oval Pocket watch. The former comes in a fully brushed platinum case and was the first wristwatch to feature a double escapement. The latter showcases incredible technical prowess as it’s geared with an advanced flying tourbillon with a remontoir and detent escapement. Both of these horological masterpieces are expected to fetch from 800,000 – 1.6 million CHF (around $945,093 – $1.8 million USD. )
