Shawn Stussy Is Bringing Back His S/DOUBLE Brand
With a little help from footwear brand Globe.
Update: After Shawn Stussy said that it was “time to engage for a long ride into the future” earlier in the week — thereby indicating that he was set to put an end to his creative hiatus — further details on the Stüssy founder’s plans have been revealed. Per a sign spotted outside of skate footwear brand Globe‘s corporate headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, Stussy will be reviving his S/DOUBLE brand in association with Globe and its founders, the brother trio of Matt, Peter and Stephen Hill.
“Hello Australia and New Zealand,” the sign, photographed by Sneaker Freaker, reads in Stussy’s iconc handstyle. “Shawn Stussy checking in to let you know that I have a new project coming with the Hill bros and the Globe crew … we are making goods again together under my S-DOUBLE mark … we all started working together over 30 years ago … after I retired the tides have changed and shifted and we now find ourselves perched to have another go at it!! Hope you approve and are ready to keep some rackspace open for our work … I am engaged and ready to move the needle once again … big aloha.”
Stussy founded S/DOUBLE in 2008, 12 years after he stepped away from his eponymous brand in 1996, aiming to spend more time in Hawaii with his family. As opposed to the graphic-heavy style of Stüssy, S/DOUBLE — which drew its moniker from a nickname Stussy’s wife gave him — offered a more menswear-driven ethos, with footwear like derby shoes and brogues as well as well as hand-crafted surfboards, though it didn’t fully depart from streetwwear staples either. Sold mostly in Japan, S/DOUBLE also collaborated with the likes of NEIGHBORHOOD, Porter and Loopwheeler.
Though there’s currently no word on what the re-launch of S/DOUBLE will entail — Globe’s specialty is footwear, after all — Stussy may have hinted at the brand’s return when he filed a new clothing logo trademark in 2020. Stay tuned for more info on the revival of S/DOUBLE as it’s made available.
Original Story: Shawn Stussy has subtly shared that he’s coming out of retirement on Instagram. On Monday, the Stüssy founder posted a photo of himself, teasing a few new projects.
Prior to editing the caption, Stussy posted the quote, “a young horse is fast, but the old horse know what’s going on… the young horse may win the race, but the old horse stay out so long,” along with writing that it’s a “big round number year” for him and that he’s “engaged with a couple projects out and about.”
He also wrote that “retirement is nice, but [it’s] time to engage for a long ride into the future.”

Later that day, Stussy edited the caption, leaving the quote but adding the context that it’s not his birthday, as many commentators had been wishing him happy birthday. He also deleted the portion about his new projects.
Stussy resigned from his namesake brand back in 1996 and sold his shares to his friend and partner in the business, Frank Sinatra Jr. He returned in the 2010s to launch the now-defunct brand, S/Double.
It’s safe to assume that Stussy isn’t reuniting with the eponymous brand but rather creating something under his own imprint or working on a collaboration.
