A Modern Golfer’s Etiquette Guide on Navigating the Course, As Told By Johnnie Walker and Devereux Golf
Calling all amateur golfers. Class is in session.

Remember those collegiate rulebooks handed out to recent arrivals during freshman year? The following guide is the golf equivalent…but groovy. For all the talk about golf radically evolving to meet a younger player base, the reality is that golf isn’t an activity where you throw caution to the wind. It’s a traditional, quiet, disciplined sport with rules that seasoned players must abide by if they intend to be taken seriously on the green. For the average Joe, however, it’s not that serious. The sport’s intersection with fashion, music and art continues to grow as a new cohort of enthusiasts enter the game, encouraging a more inclusive and forgiving environment for first-time players.

If you don’t know what you’re doing and are just kicking it with your buds, this guide is for you. It’s a 101 crash course on the basics — what most players should know to avoid disturbing their veteran counterparts. Founders of golf brand Devereux Golf, brothers Will and Bret Brunner, connected with Hypebeast to share their insider tips to help you make and keep friends at the swing.

Continue reading down below for an etiquette refresher, and join Johnnie Walker and Devereux Golf out on the course this summer with a signature whiskey cocktail in hand.

A solid round of golf leaves no traces of gameplay behind. Don’t abruptly pry out your divots or markers in the grass, and if you do, politely repair the surrounding area to maintain the playability and health of the course for other golfers. When it comes to filling in divots or repairing ball marks, keep in mind that certain depression marks in the grass can lead to permanent dead patches. A simple twisting motion with a ball repair tool will gently reinstate the grass.

We get it. You want to serve a look, but leave the red carpet struts for another day and get the hell out of the way when your playmates gear up to swing. Don’t, and we repeat, don’t step in a player’s line of sight. Make an effort not to step on other player’s putting line or create a shadow obscuring someone’s line of vision.

Perhaps you’re skilled enough to land a hole-in-one. Just know communal celebrations are in order. A hole-in-one calls for a round of drinks for your buds during or after your round, and maybe a subtle fist pump or two. For whiskey lovers, Johnnie Walker’s signature “Keep Walking 18” comes to mind, a boozy refreshment topped off with ginger beer, a splash of lime and sparkling water. Cheers!

Though a traditional golf cart looks like a European toy car, it’s not. Most states require a valid driver’s license to operate a golf cart. Simply put — don’t do anything you wouldn’t do on the actual road. Instead, follow the course’s designated path. Never drive on the tee box or the green, and never drive on the wrong side of the path. Keep your cart clean and stationed in a safe area when not in use. Respect the path and, by virtue, the game.

Yes, it’s tempting to create an Etch A Sketch design in a sand bunker marking your territory, but we advise against this. The formal protocol on the bunker is to push and pull the sand evenly, removing any footprints or glaring markings in the area. Try to refrain from dragging any sand onto the grass. For greenside bunkers, players usually rake in the direction of the green.

Imagine: you’re finally teeing up and refining your form. It’s the perfect temperature outside, and you’re feeling lucky. Ever so slightly in the distance, you hear the static friction of a velcro golf glove ripped off the hand of a nearby golfer (now your newfound enemy). It’s a vibe killer for many golfers. The same also applies to rowdy gossip at the back of the swing. If and when the moment arises, and you want to remove your glove or talk about your most recent Hinge hookup, do so quietly, indiscreetly and efficiently because some folks out on the course mean business.

It’s a dog for a dawg out in these streets. If you’re fixing to have a small bite in the middle of your game, it’s a rule of thumb to offer to buy a round for your teammates, including your caddie. It’s the golden rule of golf camaraderie. Share the love and calories and consider it a courtesy to at least offer to do so at the turn (the end of nine holes).

It’s golf at the end of the day. It’s a slow, repetitive activity, so have some swag to your game. Bring the personality, the panache, the drama, the tea. Bring the same level of enthusiasm that Larry David does on the golf course — now’s the time to score old bets and settle differences. A part of this is refining your style identity on the course. With today’s frontier of golf, myriad brands are pushing the bounds of golf wear and inspiring a contemporary set — players who are promptly city- and street-bound after their rounds. The limited-edition Johnnie Walker x Devereux Golf collection, for instance, boasts a relaxed range of T-shirts and accessories paying homage to a classic pairing: Scotch & Golf.
