Inside Hulu’s Retro-Themed Black Twitter Lounge at Hypebeast Flea
Hulu spotlighted its latest series, ‘Black Twitter: A People’s History,’ during interviews and on-site trivia games hosted by Jorge “Gitoo” Wright.

Black Twitter: A People’s History is making waves on Hulu. Onyx Collective’s latest docuseries surveys viral internet moments within the Black Twitter-sphere, from mainstream hashtags to ubiquitous memes and the inception of political and social uprisings. The series documents the power of digital communities and shines a light on the influential voices who’ve steered impactful discourse online, from #UKnowUrBlackWhen to the Black Lives Matter movement. Platforming these conversations IRL, Hulu hosted an experiential lounge area at Hypebeast Flea held at Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse on May 18 and 19.
Hypebeast Flea is a two-day experience to tap into Brooklyn’s thrift scene, featuring local vendors in fashion, music, beauty, home and more. Just as summer rounds the corner, the spirited gathering featured over 400 retailers in the lifestyle space, an open bar hosted by Modelo and ‘gram-worthy activations for fashion enthusiasts looking to win custom merch.
Hulu’s activation included curated seating by Lichen NYC, a concept furniture brand founded by Ed Be and Jared Blake, who also had a booth at Hypebeast Flea. Those who caught the first day of the event got the chance to meet media personality Jorge “Gitoo” Wright, who hosted on-site interviews and Black Twitter trivia. Centered on viral hashtags, memes and colloquial slang originating from Black Twitter, the game format quizzed unassuming bystanders on their internet lexicon and IYKYK trivia facts predating 2020.
The stylish lounge space also featured a retro-inspired TV installation, courtesy of multidisciplinary artist Shan Wallace, who drew creative inspiration from the series’ 90s-inspired promotional artworks. The installation displayed clips from the series, including soundbites from Amanda Seales, Brandon ”Jinx” Jenkins, Jemele Hill and more, with a designated headphone station allowing attendees to listen in on their social media hot takes. Attendees could also choose from a selection of custom stickers featuring notable hashtags, quotes and taglines plucked from infamous Black Twitter threads.
Hulu’s sleek yet nostalgic lounge area acted as an IRL public square, encouraging fans of the show and members of the online community to engage in lighthearted banter and embrace the same creativity, humor and unabashed expression of voices on Black Twitter.
