Yohji Yamamoto FW24 Is a Tale of Strength Personified by Volume
Continuously proving why he’s a leader with over 50 years designing.

For over five decades, Yohji Yamamoto has been changing the face of fashion as a pioneer of avant-garde styles and gender nonconformity. Even as a seasoned veteran and all-around creative legend, the designer is still growing in each season – continuously refining, tweaking, evolving and ultimately shaping standards of true craftmanship. For his latest, the Japanese designer headed to Paris Fashion Week to reveal his Fall/Winter 2024 collection.
With the new collection, Yamamoto revealed a tale of strength personified by volume. A seamless flow, the myriad of 34 looks moved from deep black (a Yamamoto signature) to inserts of white, cuts of burgundy-laced plaid to hues of gray. In his decades of designing, Yamamoto typically reveals wardrobes in deep hues, which offer greater attention to his prowess in form and how his pieces adorn, contour or conceal the human form.
The elements of unmistakable volume were seen in everything from full dresses to languid coats and even ruched skirts. Encapsulated by folds, curves, pleats and billows, Yamamoto again used fabric as his toy – bending it to his will in a manner that complimented his vision and the expanded capabilities of textiles. With his pieces, it’s clear that there’s never an end as the designer is always finding new ways to evolve and underscore even his most crucial design sentiments. That’s what makes Yamamoto a designer worth continued celebration as he retains the artistry in making clothes – never giving in to contemporary pressures and always striding his own path.
