Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami's 'Flower Parent and Child' Sculpture Floats at the Kyocera Museum of Art
As part of the museum’s expansive ’Takashi Murakami — Mononoke Kyoto’ exhibition.
Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami‘s Flower Parent and Child sculpture has landed at the Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto, Japan. The installation, which was first revealed in Tokyo in 2020, is on display as part of the museum’s Takashi Murakami — Mononoke Kyoto exhibition, showcasing 170 works by the famed Japanese contemporary artist.
The French fashion house collaborated with Murakami on the sculpture to create a “symbol of hope” during the COVID pandemic. Now, floating on a pond in the museum’s garden, the artist’s signature Flower Parent and Child cast glistens in gold atop a massive Monogram Multicolor Trunk, designed after the one that appeared in Louis Vuitton and Murakami’s 2003 collaboration. In the sculptural version, Murakami maintains the trunk’s canvas facade, metal details and wood composition.
The sartorial sculpt, which measures 13 meters high, is one of the many large-scale pieces inside the exhibition. Among the other notable pieces, Murakami’s newly-produced Rakuchū-Rakugai-zu Byōbu: Iwasa Matabei RIP is a series of works based on cardinal directions, and his Hexagonal Double-Helix Tower wards off disturbances from four divine symbols.
