An Alien Invasion Is Imminent at Natasha Zinko FW24
The Ukrainian designer recreated looks from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ with swollen accents and futuristic accessories.
Natasha Zinko sparks an interest for the extraordinary. The Ukranian-born designer is nothing short of adventurous, constantly traversing new realms that challenge conventional realities. Last season, we saw Zinko open her own gothic campsite while Fall/Winter 2024 balanced past, present, and future by heading to outer space.
“Last season, I looked down to the ground, and this season, I am looking up at the sky,” Zinko told Hypebeast backstage. Her intergalactic runway pulled inspiration from Stanley Kubrick‘s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which explores metagalactic systems by digging through the moon’s makeup with AI. “I was born in the 1960s when people wanted to escape the planet. I liked how Kubrick showed how the unordinary will soon become ordinary — such as traveling to space on a train.”
The collection is packed with concealed optimism, as Zinko dreams of traveling to space in the near future. “I tried to recreate the looks of flight attendants and astronauts, designing their uniforms influenced by Kubrick’s costumes,” she states further.
Intergalactic aliens communicated through code to ignite the runway show in darkness, transforming into booming soundtracks guiding fierce models on a mission. Swollen astronaut uniforms donned robust shoulder padding and draped decor, protected by cloth headgear and strapped “NATASHA ZINKO ORIGINALS” underwear. Asymmetrical collars connected to circular pockets on ribbed tops with exposed cutouts, paired with low-slung trousers and futuristic accessories made for adventure. Puffed outerwear and essential tracksuits defied gravity with unmatched force while unhinged models marched down the runway with hair floating in all directions. Zinko completed the collection with a fresh selection of footwear, revealing flat-edged boots that grasp onto concrete surfaces. “I am feeling very optimistic, and we are all in need of hope right now.”
