Yayoi Kusama Premieres "Infinity Mirrored Room" in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne

Yayoi Kusama has landed in Melbourne. In a new exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Japanese designer brings has unveiled a world-premiere “Infinity Mirrored Room” titled My Heart is Filled to the Brim with Sparkling Light (2024). The new infinity room is part of the artist’s landmark retrospective.

Transforming one of the galleries at NGV Melbourne, the installation welcomes visitors into Kusama’s latest exploration of the limitless visual realm through a series of reflective surfaces. The spatial illusion allows visitors to experience Kusama’s celestial universe, bridging the gap between the physical world and the infinite one. The My Heart is Filled to the Brim with Sparkling Light (2024) features Kusama’s latest work using her signature mirrors to explore spatial boundaries.

The exhibition also features 200 of the artist’s works over the past eight decades. Alongside the main exhibit, NGV will also see Kusama’s Dots Obsession installation that features massive inflated spheres. The exhibition also features “the Australian premiere of Kusama’s monumental Dancing Pumpkin (2020), a 5-meter-tall yellow-and-black polka-dotted sculpture, and of The Hope of the Polka Dots Buried in Infinity Will Eternally Cover the Universe (2019), a towering installation of tentacular forms.” The entirety of the exhibition highlights Kusama’s multidisciplinary impact, adding to the conversation her dialogue with various mediums of art including paintings, sculptures, performance art and fashion.

The exhibit runs from December 15, 2024 to April 21, 2025 at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. For more information check out the website.
