COMME des GARÇONS Reissues Rare Rei Kawakubo-Designed Chairs
Originally designed for the Paris boutique in 1983, the design reflects the founder’s minimal, brutalist sensibilities.
COMME des GARÇONS has revealed that it will reissue a rare line of chairs designed by founder Rei Kawakubo in the 1980s. In production for only a decade starting in 1983, the chairs conceived by the ubiquitous Japanese designer have become coveted collectibles.
With a simplistic geometric frame and a fence-like wired seat, the chairs boast an air of minimalism often identified with the COMME des GARÇONS ethos. The model is offered in red, black and silver–along with an alternative variant with a wooden seat.
Of all of Kawakubo’s chairs, the piece has one of the most basic foundations, abstracting the basic shape of a typical chair with no ornamentation. Other designs from the 80s-born furniture line feature more decorative details like spiraled tubular steel accents, chained backrests and rounded corners.
In 2017, 15 of the designer’s furniture designs were showcased at Paris gallery A1043 and were later displayed at Maniera’s exhibition at Collectible Brussels in 2018.
Like before, the chairs will be exclusively available at COMME des GARÇONS Paris. Buyers can contact shop@comme-des-garcons.com for details.
