Brooklyn-based artist, Susumu Kamijo will be opening his new solo exhibition Table for Us at Perrotin Hong Kong this weekend. In this new show, the artist delves into still life, transforming the genre with his distinctive, candid yet elusive touch. Known for his abstract, playful paintings of poodles and other sentient forms, the artist explores a more intimate space where florals and creatures blend in fantastical yet familiar arrangements.

Kamijo’s new body of still-life paintings evokes a nostalgic reverie of summers with his grandparents, from the taste of watermelon to the joys of festival nights during his childhood. Initially presented as traditional still life paintings centering on elements like the Morandi-esque vases and goldfish, the artworks reveal complex textures and compositions after a closer glance.

In “Summer Blossoms” (2024), its overall vibrant energy is imbued with a hint of danger. Meanwhile, “Three Fishes and Cosmos” (2024) touches on themes of mortality and domesticity, where the fishes oscillate between the vibrant and the lifeless, hinting at the tension between life stilled in paint and its wild essence.

The exhibition invites viewers to ponder the significance of containers holding flowers, fish and meals, reminiscent of Matisse’s decorative strategies. Each element appears embalmed in a protective film, suspended before decay. Susumu Kamijo’s Table for Us will be unveiled at Perrotin’s Hong Kong location on November 16, 2024. The exhibition will remain on view until January 4, 2025.
