18 East x Earth Studies Explores Our Connection With the Natural World
Using the traditional “Dabu” method of dying.
On the heels of an impressive dual-minded Nanga capsule earlier this month, Antonio Ciongoli’s 18 East is hitting the great outdoors with another collaborator. In partnership with fellow adventurous clothing label and environment advocate Earth Studies, 18 East is exploring the concept of “Human\Nature,” leveraging the connection we have with our natural surroundings, in another solid lineup of outdoor gear.
Per an Instagram caption from both brands, the capsule – entitled “East Studies” – looks to “revisit a shared exploration of human-intensive techniques and nature-focused processes,” tapping into the “Dabu” method of clothing dying; clothes are dipped in mud, then submerged into a bath of dye once the mud has hardened.
Garments include an oversized MS-110 ESCEP Jacket, an organic cotton fleece with a “bark” jacquard weave. Dyed in Jaipur, India, using the traditional Rajasthani Dabu process, the jacket’s reverse side was covered in a mud-based paste, thus resulting in the silhouette’s natural patterning and texture. The jacket comes equipped with substantial pocketing – both interior and exterior – as well as reinforced elbows and a two-way zipper with pull cords.
Continuing on, the duo also delivers the fleece-covered ESCEP Benny Pant and the MP-103 Field Pant, the latter of which draws design inspiration from brutalist architecture, French workwear and old spacesuits.
