'Joker: Folie à Deux' Receives Lowest Ever Score for a Comic Book Film

Joker: Folie à Deux has falls flat at the box office after earning an “unprecedented” D CinemaScore. Th latest rating makes the film the lowest-ever scoring comic book film. 2015’s Fantastic Four film was the last to hold the record after it received a “C-.” In comparison, Folie à Deux‘s 2019 predecessor Joker earned a “B+” grade.
In Joker 2, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his titular villain role, but this time he was joined by Lady Gaga who played his equally insane Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn. The second film followed the format of a twisted musical and love story that melded the minds of Joker and Harley. Alongside the two main actors were Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, Catherine Keener and more.
Opening to a mid $40 million USD range at the box office, below the $50 to $60 million USD range that the film was expected to do. The first film debuted to a $96.2 million USD, shattering records worldwide and later totalling $1 billion USD, in comparison. The sequel follows a current trend of worrisome theaterical releases that include Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis bomb that earned it a D+ CinemaScore. While Joker: Folie à Deux has a slow box office start, the film is still vying for Grammy wins for Phoenix and Gaga’s performances. It remains to be seen how the film will fair in the grand scheme of things.
