The Office is getting another remake and this time, Ricky Gervais’ career-launching sitcom is receiving a Mexican adaptation titled La Oficina.
The Mexican remake is set to hit Prime Video and will be developed in tandem with Amazon MGM Studios and Gary “Gaz” Alazraki’s Máquina Vega. Alazraki is known for directing and producing major hits like Nosotros los Nobles and Club de Cuervos. Alazraki is set to be the director and executive producer of La Oficina while Marcos Bucay will be the showrunner. The plot is slated to revolve around the Olimpo Soaps in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes, led by the office manager Jerónimo Ponce III. According to Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios, he said, “It’s really exciting to do our own version of one of the most successful comedies of all time. The Mexican office worker subculture is one of the richest and most surreal in the world, and with Marcos Bucay and Gaz Alazraki, the two most successful comedy creators in the country, we know we have something unique that will surpass all expectations and leave fans of previous versions speechless.”
The news of the Mexican adaptation of The Office comes after the release of the Australian version of the shoe on Prime Video. The Office was initially created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and originally aired in 2001. The U.S. version starred Steve Carrell, John Krasinski and more.
