During the London Design Festival, we teamed up with the South London atelier to host a screening dedicated to architect John Lautner.

The later part of summer is a significant one for Hypeform (ICYMI, that’s Hypebeast’s dedicated design vertical), as it was around this time last year that we launched the platform with the inaugural Hypeform A-Z of Design.

But the August and September months are also spent prepping for the London Design Festival, which comes around mid-September. This year was extra special, as Hypeform held its first London event in collaboration with design atelier Time&Space in the form of a film screening.

Founded by photographer Armand Da Silva and his partner Tyler Phoenix, Time&Space specialises in sourcing and consulting services for furniture, as well as offering up its own extensive collection for prop hire. Located in Deptford, South East London, the triple-height space is filled with design icons new and old – from Toogood’s Roly Poly chair to the folding Plia Chair.

The film shown, “Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner” took the audience on a tour of the American architect’s projects, featuring commentary from people who live in them, and those who helped him to build them.

Over the course of his career, Lautner became known for his visionary, often space-age-looking style. Most of his buildings are located in and near Los Angeles, but it was the landscape of his hometown in Michigan that consistently inspired him.

Perhaps because of their proximity to LA, but also because of their distinctive forms – Lautner’s buildings have been used in a number of music videos and movies. The Sheats–Goldstein Residence, which was built between 1961 and 1963, has, in particular, been a popular location – scenes for Pharrell and Snoop Dogg’s “Let’s Get Blown”, Doja Cat’s “Say So”, and The Big Lebowski were shot there, to name just a few.

Guests entered the space and were able to choose the seat they would occupy for the rest of the evening, which – with so many icons on offer – was a hard decision to make. Drinks came from Something & Nothing and Mull It Over, while the film loan came from the John Lautner Foundation itself.

Take a look around the space via the gallery above, and head to Hypeform for more design content.
