A Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 Leads Christie’s Hong Kong Important Watches: “The Collectibles” Part 2 Auction
Achieving a grand sale of around $24 million USD
Over the last two days, the Important Watches: Featuring “The Collectibles” Part 2 auction officially took place in Christie’s Hong Kong, achieving a grand sale of $191,847,860 HKD (approx. $24,688,872 USD) with 270 lots sold — a near 100% sell-through rate.
The top lot of the sale is an exceptional Patek Philippe Ref. 1518, which sold well above its initial estimate of $16 million HKD (around $2,059,358 USD) — closing at $19,130,000 HKD ($2,472,390 USD). Housed in 18k rose gold, the perpetual calendar chronograph features a French calendar as well as moon phases, and it’s the only example known that is “FAB. SUISSE” signed.
Also well-surpassed its initial estimation are an 18k pink gold and diamond-set Ref. 5980 and Ref. 5074 “Cathedral” minute repeating perpetual calendar wristwatch from Patek Philippe, both sold at $6.3 million HKD ($814,221 USD) respectively.
Elsewhere, a one-off Richard Mille RM 018 tourbillion starring lapis lazuli wheels went almost three times above its initial estimate and closed at $11,991,000 HKD (US $1,543,033 USD). The sale also set a few world records, including an ultra-rare platinum F.P. Journe Octa Chronographe fetching $4,410,000 HKD ( $567,490 USD).
Among the lot was a specially curated selection titled “A Platinum Odyssey,” which spotlighted 72 references featuring the titular precious metal. Noteworthy sales from this section are an extremely rare Greubel Forsey ‘Invention Piece 2’, as well as a platinum limited-edition Cartier Tank à guichet that was specially made to commemorate the Maison’s sesquicentennial anniversary. The Greubel Forsey timepiece was sold at $3,276,000 HKD ($423,395 USD), while the Cartier Tank à guichet was realized at $1,386,000 HKD ($179,129 USD)— almost seven times its pre-sale estimate.
