Yohji Yamamoto is urging everyone to bask in human nature and not speed through life. The 80-year-old designer’s Fall/Winter 2024 POUR HOMME collection slows down time in an industry that focuses on speeding up, finding the latest trends and highlighting the youth.

Yamamoto sticks to traditions. Born in during WWII, the designer recalls the “darkness” from the old days. Recounting his memories with a lit up cigarette in hand backstage, the designer explains how he tapped various friends of the house to walk the show. Rooted in history, tradition and family, the collection tells the story of basking in the moment, rather than letting the moments go by. From Wim Wenders to Norman Reedus, models of various ages, young and old, tall and short and male and female walked in pairs as if they were a family taking a stroll together.

From flowing coats to boxy jackets featuring declarative statements like, “YoYo loves black. Is your underwear black? Is it transparent?,” the designer evokes freedom of expression with cryptic and nonsensical messages sewn onto the pieces. Tailoring and suiting continues to find its way on the runway in the form of oversized overcoats, blazers and overall skirts. Models walked to renditions of Radiohead’s “Creep,” as well as a slowed down version of Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” and a version of “The Little Drummer Boy.” All these iterations were chosen to create a soft and calm scene. While many designers use music to emphasize the collection, Yamamoto wanted the clothing to stand out and the music to merely be the soundtrack.
