Iconic Pierre Paulin Furniture Curated for Château La Coste

Château La Coste, a 600-acre sculpture park, art destination and organic winery in Provence, France is honoring two legendary late designers with its latest exhibition — namely, Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and interior designer Pierre Paulin.
The exhibition features some of the most iconic furniture designs from Paulin, all set inside a pavilion that was Niemeyer’s final build. Pieces on show include the Alpha Club Chair, Déclive No 3, Tapis-Siège, Big C sofa and iconic 25-section modular Ensemble Dune sofa.
“While Paulin and Niemeyer worked in different fields of design, it is evident through this exhibition that they both shared a deep appreciation for the expressive potential of curves,” said the project team, adding that “Their creative outputs have had a significant impact on the world of design and architecture and, whether in furniture or buildings, their use of flowing, sculptural forms has brought life and energy to the spaces and objects they inhabit.”
With flow and energy being core concepts of the exhibition, Château La Coste based the exhibition around the designer’s “Pierre Paulin Program,” a concept made to redefine residential furniture norms, making rooms reconfigurable as needed.
In an interview before his passing in 2009, Paulin shared that the concept’s failure to go into production was his biggest professional regret, as he believed it may have changed furniture norms and types. Just over a decade later, however, the concept would be brought to life, through the family-owned Paulin, Paulin, Paulin, which keeps Pierre’s designs alive to date.
With Château La Coste now a significant tourist destination, the “Pierre Paulin Program” concept will be made available to experience for hundreds of visitors from around the world, possibly inspiring a more multi-functional future in furniture.
For those interested in experiencing the Program in person, the exhibition will be showing at the Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium at Château La Coste until the end of September.
