Emporio Armani Looks Back at Its Vintage Magazines for FW23-24 Campaign

Evoking vintage socialite sophistication and rebellious teddy boy aesthetics.

Giorgio Armani is an innovator, changing the way fashion was portrayed in the 1980s with items like the Emporio Armani Magazine. It was something completely new, a visionary publication that played on the eclectic and defining imagery you’d find in the likes of Esquire or Vogue, coupling it with essays and snippets, and putting the focus solely on his own brands. Today, its influences are still keen sources of inspiration for both advertisers and fashion brands alike, and now the photographer Gregory Harris looks back at the House’s magazine for Emporio Armani‘s Fall/Winter 2023-2024 campaign.

Delivered in film-like black and white photography, Harris spotlights Emporio Armani’s latest and greatest pieces, watches, accessories, and jewelry. Notably, we find the actor Nicolas Maupas and models Finn Farrell, Jeranimo Van Russell, William Franklyn, Akbar Shamji, Mathieu Simoneau, Aleyna Fitzgerald, Sija Kang, Gloria Maria and Marie Teissonniere captured in a method that feels like photojournalism, reporting on the mundanity of life in such a way that it feels surreal.

For example, one shouts into a vintage Emporio Armani-branded megaphone, echoing the teddy boy aesthetic that drips over the model’s body — here, chunky leather round-toe boots, lace-equipped cropped trousers, and a leather flight jacket with distressed ribbed detailing come together for a biker-aviator theme evocative of the past.

The vintage cues continue, as another model wearing an intricately embroidered shirt and tailored pants poses alongside binoculars, and another does the same to spotlight the pavé-set Emporio Armani jewelry on her wrist.

Womenswear ranges from deep-v-cut waistcoats that dart into high-waisted tailored pants, to a graphic tweed suit and an elegant black dress — again, all harking back to an era of refinement, sophistication, and social elites.
