The Herman Miller employee picnics — and the posters that accompanied them — have become the stuff of design legend, and now the company is paying homage to one of its most iconic poster designs by re-releasing the Watermelon Picnic Poster, created by Steve Frykholm in 1971.

Frykholm was hired as Herman Miller’s first in-house graphic designer in 1970, and one of his earliest jobs was to create a poster for the company’s annual employee event, which, itself, dated back to the late ’40s as a tradition established by Herman Miller founder D.J. De Pree. Frykholm’s first creation, the Sweet Corn Festival poster, won a design contest at the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was made available to employees at cost, starting a 20-year run of memorable yearly poster designs — of which the Watermelon Picnic Poster was, to put it in hip-hop terms, the Life After Death to Sweet Corn Festival‘s Ready To Die: a follow-up that’s just as legendary as the intro.

Now, the Watermelon Picnic Poster is back for the first time in decades (following the re-release of the Sweet Corn Festival poster in 2021). Blending vibrant greens and a flamingo-like fucsia tone with large black “seeds,” it offers a slightly abstract, entirely zoomed-in illustration of a watermelon’s juicy cross-section. Painstaking attention to detail ensures that the poster is true to its source material as well: Herman Miller printed it at the same studio as the original iteration, and even used the exact screen from 1971. It’s printed onto 100% cotton paper and framed in American maple with black, white or natural finishes.

“The Watermelon Picnic Poster is one of our customer favorites” said Amy Auscherman, Herman Miller’s director of archives and brand heritage. “I like that you can clearly tell what it is thanks to the colors, but it feels way more abstract.”

If you’re a Herman Miller loyalist or just looking for some vibrant mid-century summertime decor for your home, you can grab a Watermelon Picnic Poster via the Herman Miller webstore now. It’s limited to 200 units and priced at $895 USD.
