Across recent decades, the power of social media has been demonstrated time and time again. Whether it be convincing the world to plank or uncovering industry secrets for all to see, platforms such as Twitter have long-aided in perpetuating virality. However, as of late, many trends have started to surface via TikTok. Last year, one such trend emerged as the “Kia Challenge” — videos showcasing how to hotwire many Hyundai and Kia models that don’t have anti-theft immobilizers. Since then, a sharp uptick in theft have left many owners as victims and led to a scramble to update the many affected vehicles.

In continuation of its response to the situation, Hyundai has prepared a settlement for over 9 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Based on the amount of participants, it is valued at approximately $200 USD million in compensation for those who incurred theft-related vehicle losses or damage not covered by insurance. In addition, reimbursement for anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks and alarm kits will be distributed.

While the settlement is rolling out, existing lawsuits are still likely to head to court.

For more of the latest news in the automotive industry, Hyundai has recreated its first ever car — the Pony Coupe Concept — with all of its original details from 1974.
