In the latest teaser video for Square Enix’s forthcoming Final Fantasy XVI video game, a snippet of the official theme song can be heard. Titled “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing,” the track is both performed and written by Japanese singer-songwriter, producer, and illustrator, Kenshi Yonezu.

A huge name in Japan’s current music industry, Yonezu’s meteoric rise to popularity came after the release of “Lemon” in 2019 — which remained at the top of Billboard Japan’s year-end music charts for two consecutive years. His name is especially prominent within the ACG (animation, comics, and gaming) community, as much of his repertoire is used in popular media such as My Hero Academia, and Chainsaw Man.

In an official press release, the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida mentions that he’s a big fan of Yonezu, “I know that he has a passion for creating music that resonates across the generations, so I was sure that he’d be able to capture the world, the story, and the themes of FFXVI. He’s not only an amazing artist, but also an avid gamer and an FF fan, so please look forward to hearing his theme song!”

Similarly, Yonezu feels honored to be involved in the latest game from the franchise. The musician notes with gratitude that “Words cannot express the impact Final Fantasy has had on my life. I never thought or imagined that I would ever receive an opportunity like this. I wrote this song especially for this game.”

Final Fantasy XVI is set to release on the PlayStation 5 on June 22 and will be available on other platforms starting December 31. In the meantime, you can watch the teaser above to catch a snippet of Kenshi Yonezu’s new track “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing.”
