BEAMS and Polo Ralph Lauren Reunite for 10th Collaborative Collection
Centered around oversize fits, madras plaid and alternate logo placements.
Before BEAMS was a juggernaut of Japanese style, it was a small business that imported clothes and home goods from America — so from the very first day BEAMS was opened in February 1976, it’s had a healthy appreciation for classic Americana culture. Of course, there’s no brand more Americana than Polo Ralph Lauren, so it should be unsurprising to hear that BEAMS and Polo have a long-running collaborative relationship. This partnership has produced everything from boldly-colorblocked crewnecks to branded sweatsuits, and now, for its 10th chapter, it’s focusing on oversize fits, madras plaid and alternate logo placements.
The collection’s signature offerings are the madras plaid button-down shirts, available in both short and long-sleeve variations. Madras plaid is a prep icon that reaches all the way back to the Take Ivy days, but BEAMS has given its madras shirts a modern, streetwise twist with an extra-relaxed fit and an alternate logo placement, with Polo’s signature horse-and-rider graphic moved from the left chest to the right chest. The shirts are also accompanied by matching reversible bucket hats and unstructured 6-panel baseball caps.
Besides the plaid offerings, there’s also a quartet of T-shirts and a duo of socks. The tees, constructed of heavy cotton and oversized/alternately logo-ed just like the button-downs, are presented in black, navy, grey and white. Another tweaked design detail arrives via the collars: each shirt, no matter the size, features the same size small neck circumference to accentuate its billowy fit. Last but not least, double-logoed socks are present in white and navy.
BEAMS and Polo Ralph Lauren’s 10th collection will release via the BEAMS webstore on April 29. Prices range from ¥3,080 to ¥24,200 (approximately $23-$180 USD).
