TOGA VIRILIS SS23 Takes Vintage Americana to the Streets of London
An East-meets-West aesthetic pimps up shirts, trousers, baggy shorts, Cuban heels and much more.

Yasuko Furuta‘s cult label TOGA VIRILIS knows its identity, toying between vintage Americana and Eastern-inspired design details to create a wardrobe of clothing unique to itself. Keeping up the momentum is Spring/Summer 2023, which for the first time sees the brand head to the streets of London in its Valeria Herklotz-shot and Eliza Conlon-styled lookbook.
Underpinning the looks this season is a sense of subverted formality, with shirts and trousers taking a considerable role in the SS23 drop. For example, embroidered jellyfish, pine trees, and pineapples, as well as Hibiscus prints and plenty of bold color choices work tailored button-ups and downs, most of which are accessorized with Western metal belt clip-detailed bolo ties, adding in that Americana nuance.
Collegiate themes appear within a burgundy cardigan dressed with V-neck embroidered border detailing, adding a historic touch to something that could feel preppier, while intarsia patterns on button-downs work like suspenders, alluding to them holding up a pair of wide-fit checkerboard shorts.
These shorts match trousers and a Western-detailed chore jacket, while fluid buckle-fastened car coats, fringed denim, Cuban boots and studded accessories round out the SS23 delivery.
