With May and The Met Gala right around the corner, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has revealed more details regarding what to expect for the upcoming Karl Lagerfeld exhibit for The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition.

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will take place in the museum’s Tisch Galleries from May 5 to July 16. The exhibit, like the name, suggests, will give attendees a look into the late designer’s iconic collections from the ’50s up until the time of his death in 2019. Those looking to visit the exhibit this summer will be able to have a first-hand experience and a better understanding of the designer’s complex creative processes as well as collaborative relationships with “premières d’atelier,” the seamstresses behind his creations. Amongst the 150 garments exhibited, a majority of them will feature Lagerfeld’s sketches.

In charge of the curation of the exhibit is the Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu while Lagerfeld’s longtime confidante Amanda Harlech will also act as the creative consultant. Tadao Ando, who first met Lagerfeld in 1996 and is a Pritzker Prize-winning architect is designing the exhibit. Loïc Prigent, who documented Lagerfeld’s collections from 1997 to 2019, will produce video content for the exhibition. In a statement, Andrew Bolton of the Costume Institute said that it will showcase “the fluid lines of his sketches found expression in recurring themes in his fashions, uniting his designs for Chanel, Chloé, Fendi, his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld, and Patou, creating a diverse and prolific body of work unparalleled in the history of fashion.”

The Met Gala, which is scheduled for May 1, is co-chaired by Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and, as always, global chief content officer of Condé Nast, Anna Wintour. Major support and funding is being provided by Chanel and Fendi. In conjunction with the exhibit, a book titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will also release in May.
