Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY's SS23 Campaign Explores Queer Identities in Constant Flux
While also highlighting the clothing from the now-arrived “PHWOARRR!” collection.

Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY took Milan Fashion Week by storm this past season, going to show the leaps and bounds the increasingly emerging designer is making to step into the big league. The show was great, but what really struck was that it was the designer’s MFW debut, and their first runway in some years, meaning that the collection you see above from Spring/Summer 2023 hasn’t been given the best of spotlights — until now.
Starring in its own campaign, the SS23 “PHWOARRR!” collection now comes to life as it begins to release. It’s full of color, scrapbooking, nostalgia, camp and Queer identity, energy, and expression. It’s fun, but there’s also an element of seriousness to it all: “Queerness is defiance, but it is also adaption. It is a process of constant synthesis and hybridization, constant flux. It is always unapologetic, of course, but in the face of external hostility we find innovative ways to survive,” notes the designer.
With this in mind, multiple personalities come to play in the SS23 campaign, representing a group of friends and the larger world that Queer identities find themselves in. Faces scrawled on a jacket are lost and busy in its own crowd, while checkered prints like a race flag only encourage a sense of rapidness to find oneself.
Mesh netting has been used across tops to play with gender norms, and of course as have skirts and kilts, while hoodies with little ears taken from the designer’s signature hats implore a longing for escapism.
