Roy Lichtenstein’s Dynamic BMW Art Car Resurfaces in New PUMA x BMW Motorsport Collaboration
Seeing the brands translate the iconic Ben-Day dots into a capsule collection.

Blending art with the world of motorsport, the BMW Art Car Series first launched in 1975 and has since seen a range of iconic artists incorporate their aesthetic onto various car models. Initially revealed in 1977, the third installment of the series saw Roy Lichtenstein dress the BMW 320i Turbo in his artwork. The design itself references the 24-hour cycle of Le Mans with a kinetic landscape styled in the artist’s signature pop-art flair.
Now, in light of Lichtenstein’s 100th birthday, PUMA connects with BMW M Motorsport to pay homage to the artist’s dedicated Art Car in the form of a new capsule collection. From sneakers to streetwear garments, the inspired offering interprets the dynamic design with overlapping dots, stripes, and other trademark patterns.
The new capsule revolves around two stand-out pieces: the PUMA suede sneakers and the oversized bomber. For the former, a soft beige body plays the host to a rising sun illustration on one side as well as a yellow and blue printed Formstrip on the outer lateral. The oversized bomber, however, is more bold and overstated in its design, layering the patterns from the Art Car with Lichtenstein’s other revered illustrations.
In the accompanying lookbook, these items are styled alongside the capsule’s sweatpants in a block-toned green. From the sporty bomber to the streetwear-inspired pieces, PUMA outlines a familiar motorsport wardrobe that tastefully revives the unique artistic spirit that was founded through the series.
To celebrate the launch of the new capsule collection, PUMA and BMW hosted an exclusive event that exhibited Lichtenstein’s BMW’s 320i Turbo. The event also invited creators to design their own pieces of art in the distinctive styles of the historic collaborators of the cars. Stay tuned to Hypebeast to discover what went down.
