Leonardo DiCaprio Invests in Independent Watch Brand, ID Genève
To bring awareness to luxury watchmaking with sustainable practices.
Leonardo DiCaprio is now one of its biggest investors for ID Genève. The Swiss independent watchmaker just hosted a press conference announcing that it has received $2 million CHF (approximately $2.2 million USD) in investment, namely from DiCaprio alongside other investors.
ID Genève marks the first Swiss company and the first watch brand that Leonardo DiCaprio has ever personally invested in. According to the brand’s spokesperson, the world-famous actor invested with the hopes of showing the world that luxury timepieces can be manufactured in a sustainable way. In the image supplied by the brand, DiCaprio is sporting the Circular S Sun Dial, a timepiece starring a fitting golden yellow color and is composed of 100% recycled steel that has been melted in a solar furnace.
Nicolas Freudiger, co-founder of ID Genève tells Hypebeast, “Our vision behind the watches is to play an active role in the ecological transition and have a positive impact on the industry and on our planet. The luxury industry is evolving, and we have a responsibility to shed light on solutions for climate change. We have always been interested in working with a global environmental advocate like Leonardo DiCaprio, and we’re thrilled to welcome him as an investor and environmental advocate of the brand.”
In tandem with this news, ID Genève also celebrates its official North American debut with a special time-teller. The new Circular C reference is announced as a 20-piece limited edition and is the first watch to be created with Regenerative Carbon™ technology. Developed in partnership with CompPair, the two Swiss companies united over shared values in innovation and circularity to produce this new timepiece.
Attired in a 41mm case made of recycled steel, the watch’s dial, bezel, and side embellishments are crafted from recycled carbon fibers that are sourced from wind turbine manufacturing waste. In addition, the watch straps are derived from vegetal sources and are 100% compostable. For more information, visit ID Genève’s official site.
