Following the exploration of the hottest nightlife spots in their cities, the Hypebeast Africa Culture Scouts break down their fits of the day for this installment of the series captured on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5.

All four of the scouts boast a unique style and fashion identity that cover a range of influences. As well as supporting local brands, they also mix and match with well-known grails, and each fit is a testament to the style-led choices that they incorporate day-to-day.

“My outfit reflects my passion for skateboarding and hip-hop, but also showcases my support for local brands,” Day Marumo says. A skateboarder hailing from Johannesburg, the videographer/designer leans towards an understated look that includes relaxed-fit silhouettes that provide comfort and free movement, complemented by a range of statement accessories that bring out his personality.

Opting for the “Worst Thursdays” graphic T-shirt designed by South African labels ShelfLife and Mother-in-Law, it’s collaborations like these that exemplify the love of local support. Paired with ShelfLife’s signature cargo pants that “align with my loose-fitting clothing preference allowing me to move freely on my skateboard.” He continues, “The pants combine style and functionality, making them an essential element of my outfit.” On his feet, Marumo chooses the Nike Dunk 50 years of hip-hop edition, also sourced from ShelfLife, to honor his love for the genre. To complete his outfit, he styles a tonal camo crossbody bag from Dead.93, a visor cap from City Outfitters as well as grillz by Fusi Grillz Lab.

For Cape Town-based photographer Mikhailia Vera Martha Petersen, she teamed up with her friend and long-time collaborator Blünke Van Rensburg — founder of Troste Tert — to capture her in the brand’s green taffeta dress. “Sarah Jessica Parker wore something like that heavy in pink. I just wanted to make a statement, something that I am scared to wear myself,” she explains.

With a free-flowing dress, Petersen’s choice could only be set to the backdrop of the city’s green spaces. To accommodate the bold statement piece, accessories from local jewelry brand’s Acute Apparel debut Mercury Collection add to her look. “Each piece is designed and handmade in-house via the ancient art of sand casting,” she says. Juxtaposing the chic with streetwear, Petersen sports the Nike Lahar Low sneakers to showcase the versatility of her aesthetic.

Tapping into ‘90s influences, Nondumiso Shange’s daily fit has been put together for both style and comfort. Shooting during the season that has seen “Joburg witnessing an unexpected weather shift” she adapted her look to tackle any unpredictable changes.

Layering a quilted jacket from retailer Woolworths with a black tank top from Nigerian label Ashluxe, her thrifted cargo pants from Athwart Vintage lend a vintage flair to her style choice. Accessories complete Shange’s fit as she goes for yellow-tinted sunglasses by Mkize Sunnies as well as classic Vans slip-ons in a checkered print. “This ensemble features nods to the likes of Missy Elliott, TLC, and other Black icons making it a true homage to the era of iconic style,” she explains as the details of her nails add pops of color to round off her look.

Drawing on the rich cultural heritage of South Africa, Teboho Hlatshwayo’s outfit is inspired by izikhothane: a sub-culture of showmanship or dance battles where individuals compete against one another. “Izikhothane pride themselves in being the best dressed wherever they are,” he explains. “They go out of their way to get their hands on rare gear to achieve this.”

Channeling this inspo through his outfit, Hlatshwayo opts for a DMD long-sleeved top “that is a staple of a skhothane’s uniform,” a pair of good-fitting jeans as well as Florsheims loafers for an elevated look. His fit is then complete with a Nike dri-fit cap to bring a “fusion of formal and sportswear.”
