'One Piece Film: Red' Tops 'Howl's Moving Castle' as 4th Highest-Grossing Anime Film Globally

As the theatrical run for One Piece: Film Red draws to a close, the One Piece team announced that global box office revenue for the fifteenth feature film has officially exceeded ¥31.9 billion JPY (over $245 million USD), surpassing Studio Ghibli‘s Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) to become the fourth highest grossing anime film and Japanese film ever.

The top three highest-grossing anime film list currently includes Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train (2020), Spirited Away (2001), and Your Name (2016). Domestically in Japan, One Piece Film: Red is ranked number 5 behind Hayao Miyazaki‘s Princess Mononoke. Other records that were broken by the most recent One Piece film, highlighting the franchise’s global reach, are the highest-grossing anime film in Indonesia, the biggest opening for an anime film in France, and the biggest opening for a PG-12 film in Saudi Arabia.

Uta—the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as “otherworldly”—is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta’s fans—including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound. The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks’ daughter. Uta stands on the stage, with the ordinary wish of “Making the world happy with my music.” There’s Gordon, a mysterious character who knows Uta’s past, and glimpses of Shanks’ shadow. On Elegia, the island of music, Luffy and Uta reunite for the first time since they last met 12 years ago in Foosha Village.

To celebrate the occasion, the official One Piece Twitter account releases a special wanted poster artwork of Luffy in Gear 5 drawn by series creator Eiichiro Oda. Looking forward, the first visuals for Netflix‘s live-action One Piece series recently surfaced.
