NFL Launches "The Pro Bowl Games" Featuring Flag Football and Week-Long Skills Competitions
The league announced that this will replace the original Pro Bowl.
The NFL has officially announced that it will be transforming and renaming the Pro Bowl to “The Pro Bowl Games.” The 2023 games will be held in Las Vegas and are expected to be a week-long event celebrating the players’ skills. AFC and NFC players will showcase their non-football and football skills in a series of challenges, as well as join in on a game of flag football.
14-time Pro Bowl pick, Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions company will be shapping the program and promoting the event throughout the week. He will also be part of the coaching staff for the flag football game. In a statement, NFL’s executive vice president, Peter O’Reilly said,
“We’ve received invaluable feedback from players, teams and fans about reimagining the Pro Bowl, and as a result, we’re thrilled to use The Pro Bowl Games as a platform to spotlight Flag football as an integral part of the sport’s future while also introducing fun, new forms of competition and entertainment that will bring our players, their families and fans closer than ever before.”
The addition of flag football comes from the fact that it is a critical piece and exercise that has long been used as a part of the NFL’s development strategy. The Pro Bowl originally debuted in January 1951 in Los Angeles. Since its inception, recent criticism regarding the quality of play in the Pro Bowl has caused players to be concerned about getting hurt. They often treat it more as an exhibition than a competition. With the element of flag football, it will increase competition by avoiding potential major injuries that result from tackling, blocking, and hitting.
Similar to previous years, fans voting will determine the AFC and NFC team rosters. Tom Brady has the record for most invitations to the Pro Bowl at 15. The 20223 The Pro Bowl Games will be held at Allegiant Stadium on February 5, 2023.
