When Alessandro Michele was appointed creative director of Gucci in 2015, the fashion-sphere was critical about what he would deliver at the helm of the century-old label. It’s fair to say he has far from disappointed, propelling the brand into its own dimension.

For Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection, Michele dove into the relationship between fashion and mirrors, expanding on the idea that clothing can reflect oneself in reimagined proportions. Here, he continued highlighting gender-fluid silhouettes while paving the way for its ongoing collaboration with adidas.

For Spring/Summer 2023, Gucci took to Milan, presenting a collection that saw double everything. Entitled “Gucci Twinsburg,” the name nods to the suburban Ohio city where the largest gathering of twins takes place yearly.

Gucci’s unmissable antics kicked off in a utilitarian venue encapsulated by hundreds of screens, mirroring attendees’ faces at every corner. An eerie recording set affairs into motion, repeating phrases that exemplified the notion of two things perceived as parallel yet complete opposites in reality.

Opening the long-awaited showcase was a slim-cut blazer equipped with leg garters that doubled as trousers. Twill cardigans were paired with slouchy leather bottoms, while cropped sequined blazers shined under the spotlight decorated with floral embellishments in contrasting “Royal Blue”. Leopard-printed tights and dissimilar snakeskin boots accompanied ruffled ensembles in dazzling shades of magenta.

Ravishing trench coats were blasted with vibrant lipstick and tool graphics, complete with reflective silver lapels. Beaded headgear cascaded from ear to waist and down to sandals, mirrored onto thumbless gloves. American Furby toys hung from denim jorts, footwear and chained bags while also illustrated on glistening dresses. Chained jewelry reminiscent of tribal wear decorated the face of every model, appearing alongside design cues from Chinese, Native American and Moroccan cultures.

Mid-way through the showcase, walls ascended and allowed viewers to catch a glimpse of identical twins, each strutting on distinct sides of the runway, sporting harmonizing looks concealed from the other. Then, for their final bow, the siblings merged to hold hands and celebrate unity for one and all.

Gucci’s double-take worthy SS23 collection “Gucci Twinsburg” can be seen in the gallery above. Stay tuned to Hypebeast for more Milan Fashion Week SS23 content as the week continues.
