Cecilie Bahnsen's ASICS Collaboration Will Put a Spring (Flower) In Your Step
Presenting her take on the GEL-1090, GEL-1130, and GEL-NIMBUS during Paris Fashion Week SS23.
For Cecilie Bahnsen‘s second Paris Fashion Week show, we were treated to more than just a pastel rainbow of dresses ready to twirl in, as the Copenhagen-based designer presented not one, but seven collaborative ASICS sneakers. Taking on the ASICS GEL-1130 and GEL-1090, the designer followed up on her previous team-up with Suicoke by echoing the signature design motif on these sandals: flowers.
Here, retro running vibes informed by ASICS’ past make a bold stamp on the sneakers, with a silver colorway hitting two main styles. From there, Bahnsen opts for a choice of black and yellow hues on the GEL-1090 and ice blue and white shades on the GEL-1130, before covering both in her appliqué bouquet.
Cut-out flowers from the same material as the GEL-1090’s upper are delicately placed on top of the sneaker, looking like a meadow that softens up the ’90s and ’00s-informed runner. Silver is a color not frequently found within the floral palette, so with it appearing on the sneakers we are treated to a collaboration that perfectly captures both partners’ spirits — a pair fit for all audiences, too.
As for the GEL-1130, Bahnsen decorates the sneaker a full spring green flower patch (as well as orange and blue iterations), working the toe and heel as if the shoe has been submerged in a petal field or perhaps used as the plant pot to grow said attachments.
Speaking on her collection, Bahnsen said: “I’ve been thinking a lot this season about how the girls in the studio and our community wear our clothes. How they might put on a dress on a rainy Tuesday morning to feel good, or go to a party on a Saturday night.” This not only informs the clothes, but also where the ASICS collaboration fits into the body of work — these are sneakers designed for all, particularly in cases where you have a morning run, work all day, and a party at night, and one pair of shoes can see you through it all.
To round things off, a number of highly-customized pairs also hit the runway. Less identifiable, it seems Bahnsen has presented the GEL-NIMBUS in silver, outfitted in a bold array of silver floral appliqués, with another pair appearing in all black and a final in blue and white.
