Burberry Cancels SS23 Runway Show at London Fashion Week
In the wake of Her Majesty’s death.

Following the news that Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, Burberry has announced that it will be canceling its upcoming Spring/Summer 2023 at London Fashion Week. A statement from the British luxury fashion house has been shared with Hypebeast regarding the cancelation,
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.
As a mark of respect, we have taken the decision to cancel our Spring/Summer 2023 runway show due to take place on 17 September in London.
We hope to see you in the near future.
As the Queen is mourned by her family, the United Kingdom and people all around the world, the British government must set in place an intricate protocol that handles Her Majesty’s death. Dubbed “Operation London Bridge,” the plan is put into place on Day Zero, when the public is notified of the Queen’s death. Prince Charles immediately succeeds the throne, becoming King Charles III. The Queen’s funeral is expected to occur on Day 10, where heads of state, family members and those invited will attend the funeral held at Westminster Abbey.
Just recently, the British Fashion Council confirmed that London Fashion Week will still go ahead as planned, though the shows on the day of the Queen’s funeral will be canceled. BFC released a statement following the news of Her Majesty’s death stating, “London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event, and an important moment for designers to show their collections at a specific moment in the fashion calendar, we recognise the work that goes into this moment. Therefore, shows and presentations of collections can continue, but we are asking that designers respect the mood of the nation and period of national mourning by considering the timing of their image release.” The BFC has also recommended that all “non-essential” events including openings and parties, to be canceled as the U.K. enters in a 10-day mourning period for the death of the monarch.
Burberry has yet to announce if it will reschedule its SS23 show. There is currently no word on whether or not other brands showing at London Fashion Week will follow in Burberry’s footsteps to cancel.
